What you are holding
The contact print is the unretouched negative behind Plate X, kept back from publication. The tracing was made against it by hand — whose hand is not certainly established, though the margin note suggests an answer. The two records can be compared only when their outer border and string are held in the same orientation.
The contact print, tracing, and published plate are not identical records. The comparison is retained as a record in its own right.
